20th-Apr-2005 02:13 am - The Gay Marriage Issue
:digdug2:
Alright, I'm fucking tired of this issue. I'm tired of seeing "democrats" cave on this issue to the right wing simply because they're too stupid to see the glaring contradiction between a ban on gay marriage and the constitution.

First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Not only does this one sentence kill the whole idea that the fore fathers meant for the US to be a "Christian" nation, it also kills the gay marriage ban. Judaism and certain branches of Christianity willingly marry homosexuals under God and by putting a ban into effect state governments not only trample on those churches' first amendment rights but also the first amendment rights of the homosexuals who's faith and religious views aren't the same as the run of the mill Christians. Since when was the government allowed to tell us what we can and can't believe?

Further more, the ban also breaks the first half of the law, that being "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." By accepting the view that marriage is defined as being between solely a man and woman, the states have established a law in respect to a particular religion. For abunch of people who are supposedly so supportive of the American system and the constitution, they sure do trample on the first amendment quite frequently. So to those of you who don't like the way the fore fathers wrote the constitution, LEAVE MY FUCKING COUNTRY RIGHT THE FUCK NOW TRAITORS!

So how do we solve this religious dispute? Well naturally, as they can't tell us what we can't do, we can't tell them what they have to do. So what's the solution? Civil Unions for ALL, that's right, ALL Americans. This ends the dispute on the marriage issue as marriage is put back into the hands of religion and is no longer a state matter. Let the churches deal with who they do and don't marry.

"Well what about polygamy?!" What about it? Don't allow more than two people to be part of a civil union and let the married to multiple people issue be handled by God. If abunch of women want to share one man, hey that's their thing, as long as they don't get tax benefits and the like for it, why do I care?

"Well what about incest?!" Don't allow direct relatives to join in civil unions, if they want to marry outside of a civil union, who am I and who are you to tell them their religious beliefs are wrong?

"Well what about bestiality?!" Don't allow people and animals to enter into a civil union, seeing as how the animal really can't speak in it's own interest this should be logical. If a dude or a chick wants to think they're married to a sheep or a goat, fuck it, who cares, it has no official standing!

I'm just so fucking tired of this. Cut the state loose from any religious grasp and be done with these stupid fucking issues that are none of anyone's fucking business. A dude can marry a fucking turnip for all I care, it doesn't affect me in the fucking least. Rick Santorum, shove that up your tight ass you fecal lube pool! Sorry. I've been saying all of this for almost a year and it was the first thing which popped in my head when the issue came up and I've only seen this view in ONE paper, The Village Voice, three weeks after I had already been touting it on numerous message boards. Why this hasn't been touted more frequently is beyond me.
15th-Apr-2005 01:26 am - Bill Clinton, in the news again!
:digdug2:
So apparently there's some people crying foul over an attack Bill Clinton made towards Arthur Finkelstein. Here's how Salon.com summarizes it:

"Clinton's attack on Finkelstein occurred Monday at a Harlem press conference to announce his initiative to deliver AIDS drugs to children in Africa. Clinton was asked what he made of Finkelstein's plan to launch a multimillion-dollar, Swift Boat-style ad campaign to derail Hillary Clinton's 2006 Senate reelection campaign, and stop her likely run for the White House in 2008. Clinton answered by referring to another bit of recent Finkelstein news -- reports that Finkelstein, who is gay, had legally married his partner.

"I was sad," Clinton told reporters. "I mean, there were two stories. One is that he went to Massachusetts and married his longtime male partner, and then he comes back here and announces this [anti-Hillary campaign]. I thought one of two things: Either this guy believes his party is not serious and is totally Machiavellian in its position [on gay rights], or you know, as David Brock said in his great book 'Blinded by the Right,' there's some sort of self-loathing or something. I was more sad for him.""

Now even the reporter at Salon who wrote the article I lifted the above from is puzzled by what Clinton said and is calling it "gay bashing." I on the other hand do not find it to be gay bashing nor do I find it out of line. I think it was perfectly acceptable and a fantastic way to answer the question he was asked (what do you think of Finklestein's new Swift Boat-style ad campaign against your wife). To put his response in plain English, "I find it funny that a man working for a party who's obviously against his interests either doesn't take his party seriously or he's a self-hating gay man." Frankly that's the way I look at any minority who sides with the Republicans, they're either idiots or they're self-hating, either one should be frowned upon, and we shouldn't be chastising our former president for saying as much. I'm of the mind that we should start handing out Political Darwin Awards to those who commit political suicide which keeps them from prospering.

I say all this not as a leftist, but as a bisexual male and I see people like Finklestein as being the Uncle Toms of the gay community. They should all be banned from clubs, drugs, and Will & Grace for all eternity! Go Bill!
